§ 18-11. Visibility at intersections.

  • It is the intent of this section to provide maximum safety at intersections of streets with each other and with driveways, to protect pedestrians, operators and passengers of automotive vehicles and all other transportation devices through the use of visibility triangles at such intersections. Visibility triangles shall be provided as stated below:

    (1)

    Within such visibility triangles nothing shall be erected, placed, parked, planted or allowed to grow in such a manner as materially to impede vision between a height of two (2) and ten (10) feet above the established grade of the centerlines of intersecting streets and with driveways or if no grade has been officially established, then above the average elevation of the existing surface of such intersecting streets and driveways.

    The requirements within the latest version of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Manual of Uniform Minimum Standards for Design, Construction and Maintenance for Streets and Highways for Sight Distance for Intersection Maneuvers shall be followed.

    Where unusual and extreme conditions and/or terrain features present substantial obstacles to provision and maintenance of such visibility triangles, the Development Special Magistrate may permit as a special approval, as provided for in section 21-55 [21-126], the provision and maintenance of lesser visibility clearance, but such clearance shall be the maximum which is reasonably practicable to provide and maintain.
